Join us at the library for some winter reading fun!

TRACK YOUR READING in January/February to enter 2 contests.

Pick up a bookmark at the library and track the time you read. Return bookmarks when complete and staff will enter your name in TWO winter reading contests: the Northern Lights Regional Library Winter Reading Contest AND in the Vermilion Library Winter Reading Contest. See details for these contests below.

Join us for some crafts & activities in January and February. Take-home, online or at the library. You’ll have some fun and earn a chance to enter the VPL contest. See details of activities by month below.

Contest Details

NLLS Winter Reading Contest

  • All ages.
  • Use our bookmark to track reading in January / February.
  • Return bookmarks when complete and staff will enter your name in the NLLS contest.
  • Bookmarks must be returned BEFORE February 28.
  • Contest prizes: a chance to win a Kobo for 3 age categories.

Vermilion Library Winter Reading Contest

  • All ages.
  • Use our bookmark to track reading in January / February.
  • Return bookmarks when compete and staff will enter your name in the VPL contest.
  • Take part in library activities in January /February to enter the VPL contest as well.
  • Bookmarks must be returned BEFORE February 28
  • Contest prizes: a chance to win 1 of 3 $50 Vermilion Chamber Gift cards.

A List of Activities by Month:

JANUARY

  • Community Art Display – January 3-31 (ALL AGES) Inhouse/Take-home crafts
    • Pick up a weekly mini-craft to complete at home
    • Bring it to the library and add it to our window display
    • Staff will give you a draw slip to enter the VPL contest

        (Complete and display 1 craft/week in January = 4 chances to enter the draw)

  • What Are you Curious About - January 3-31 (ALL AGES) Inhouse/FB
    • Tell us something you’re interested in knowing more about by completing an online survey or by adding your comments to our inhouse display. Help the library provide relevant programming and resources for our community.

        (1 draw slip for participating in our Curiosity Campaign)

  • Book Quiz Display January 17-28 (ADULT) Inhouse Art Display
    • Challenge your knowledge of classic books by participating in our book quiz display –can you figure out the book title with the clues provided?

        (1 draw slip for participating in this self-challenge)

 

FEBRUARY

  • Wrapped Book Displays February 1-15 (ADULT & JUNIOR (Kids 8-12)) Inhouse
    • Take home one of the wrapped books from our displays.
    • (1 book limit/participant for Blind Date with a Book display = 1 draw slip)
    • (1 book limit/participant for Juvenile Books in Disguise display= 1 draw slip)
  • Shredded Book Display Feb 14-28 (ADULT) Inhouse
    • Unscramble the author and title in our shredded book display.
    • (1 entry/person for participating in our scrambled word challenge)
  • Shadow Figures Quiz Feb 14-28 (UNDER 12) Inhouse
    • Guess the characters from well-known children’s books in our shadow figure display.
    • (1 draw slip for participating in this self-challenge)
  • Solve the riddle Posting Feb 4 & 18 (ANY AGE) FB & Web blog
    • Hmmmh, can you figure out the answer to the riddles we post on FB & on our website blog this month?
    • (1 guess/riddle = 1 draw slip)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up for the Winter Reading program?

You don’t need to sign up. Just stop by the library to pick up a bookmark to track reading and join in activities the library has planned in Jan/Feb.

How do I track reading?

  • Pick up a bookmark at the library, check-off your time read using the increments listed on the bookmark.
  • Return the bookmark when all time slots are checked off.
  • Staff will enter your name in the NLLS AND Vermilion draws.

Do I use separate bookmarks to track reading for each contest?

No! Track your reading using one of our bookmarks. When you return a bookmark, library staff will make certain your name is entered in both reading contests.

Can I return more than one bookmark?

Yes! There’s no limit to the number of bookmarks you can complete and submit.

How old do I have to be to enter the contests?

Any age! We have 3 bookmarks to cover 3 different age groups: 0-9, 10-13, 14+

My child doesn’t read on their own yet. Can they join in the contests?

Yes! Track the time you read to your child.

When do bookmarks need to be returned to enter the contests?

Bookmarks must be returned BEFORE February 28 to be entered in the contests.
