2022 Summer Reading Program

This Summer we invite kids ages 5-12 to register for the Read 500 Minutes Challenge and pick up 2 bookmarks to track your minutes read. Reading 500 minutes earns you 2 great prizes and an entry in the Summer Reading Draw. Watch for kid friendly activities at the library this July/August by following us on FB or checking here on our website.

Can You Read 500 Minutes This Summer?

  • Register here for the Read 500 Minutes Challenge or stop by the library to register.
  • Pick up 2 bookmarks to track the minutes you read this summer.
  • Bring your bookmarks to the library when you reach 250 minutes and 500 minutes read to collect 2 great prizes.
  • Reading 500 minutes will also earn you an entry in the summer reading draw with a chance to win one of three $50.00 Vermilion Chamber gift cards.

 

Programs at the Library this summer:

Drop in Family Storytime & Craft

Join us at the library for stories, rhymes & a craft.

 

 

 

Tuesdays 10:30-11:15am

Starts July 5-

Content best suited for 8 & under.

Children must be accompanied by an adult

No registration required

Drop in Tuesday Afternoons

Join us at the library for these fun activities:

Pokémon: Bring your cards to swap or battle

Lego: Build a Lego creation of your own choice or try one of our theme challenges

Board Games: Choose one of our board games to play with others

Activities for the Curious

Sign up for each session below:

 

SESSION 1: July 12 - Smart Builders

 Sign up for some building activities here or contact the library to register 

  • test your memory with the Perch of Perception Challenge
  • build using magnetic building blocks
  • make some tangram art  
  • use colour-coded Bits to create inventions

SESSION 2: July 26 – Codemakers 

 Sign up for some coding activities here or contact the library to register 

  • code the answer to a riddle using hieroglyphics
  • learn the basics of coding language while manoeuvring a character through a maze inspired by fairy tales
  • check out some pint-sized robots (Ozobots) and get creative creating colour code with markers

SESSION 3: August 9 – It’s Electric

Sign up for some electric activities here or contact the library to register 

  • Lumos! Make a Harry Potter light-up magic wand
  • use Makey Makey to connect a computer to the world of things around you

Partner Programs

Wetland Explorers – Buggin’ Out Down by the River

Registration has been filled for this program.

Join us at the Vermilion River Dam to explore our watershed and some of the bugs living there!

Vibe Thursday Mornings Summer Programming

Library staff are reading some stories @ 11:00am as part of Vibe’s Thursday morning drop-in summer programming. All are welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there take home craft kits this year?

No take home kits this year. A weekly craft is included with the drop-in family story time session on Tuesday mornings. NOTE: extra crafts/supplies will be available for pickup after the story time for anyone unable to attend…while supplies last.

 

How do I get my reading reward prizes?

Sign up for the Read 500 Minutes Challenge, then stop by the library to pick up the 2 bookmarks you’ll use to track your reading.

  • Return bookmark #1 when you’ve read 250 minutes and receive a prize
  • Return bookmark #2 when you’ve completed 500 minutes and receive a second prize
  • NOTE: If you read 500 Minutes this summer, you may also enter the summer reading draw for a chance to win 1 of 3 $50 Chamber gift cards!

Make sure to return your bookmarks to the library by August 19th to ensure you– the 2nd bookmark will be automatically included in the draw.

 

How long do I have to pick up my reading reward prizes?

August 19 is the deadline to return your bookmarks & pick up your reading reward prizes. Returning your bookmarks by August 19 will also ensure your name will be included in the Summer Reading Draw. The draw date: August 22

Want to Join a Reading Program Online?

Check out the TD Summer Reading Program: TD Summer Reading Club. It is free, you register online, and you can track minutes read with a digital booklet.

There will be ebooks available to read any time over the summer (no waiting) and you can view author/illustrator readings and workshops. Kids can vote for a favourite book, review books, participate in weekly trivia, and more.

Check the TD website for kid-safe information. The library does not have access to any of your online content.
